“Piatra-Neamț, the city around Stephen the Great’s Tower“
Piatra Neamţ is the capital city of Neamţ Country, in the historical region of Moldavia, eastern Romania. Because of its privileged location in the Eastern Carpathian mountains, it is considered one of the most picturesque cities in Romania.
Tourism has developed more recently in this town with over 100,000 inhabitants, and slowly becomes a major tourist center, especially in winter time. There is a gondola that crosses over the city, leaving the train station and reaching the top of the mountain “Cozla”, where you can admire a splendid panorama over the city. A two way ticket is about 3 € and is well worth because it’s spectacular view from up there.
Piatra Neamţ lies in the “Bistriţa” River Valley, surrounded by mountains “Pietricica”, “Cozla” and “Cernegura”. The area around Piatra Neamţ is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Romania, called “Petrodava” in the past and is known for its array of old monasteries surrounding the area.
Inherited from Prince Ştefan cel Mare, built between 1468 and 1475, it represents a genuine effigy of nobility. The harmony of shapes and exterior decorations, the inconspicuous monumentality, the complex fully illustrates the beauty of the Moldavian architecture during Ştefan cel Mare’s rule. The 19 meters high belfry was erected in 1499 and has become iconic for the town. From up there, visitors can enjoy almost a bird’s-eye view of Piatra Neamţ and the Bistrita Valley.
From a geological stand of point, the mountains Cozla, Pietricica and Cernegura that surround the town Piatra Neamț represent the last step of the Carpathians and they are located at the intersection between Carpathians and Sub-Carpathians. In the north part of the town we can see the hill Cozla with a height of 852 m, in the east there is Pietricica with a height of 530 m and on the south there is Cernegura with a height of 679 m.
The Zoological Park, located on Stefan cel Mare street, was arranged between 1900-1904 by Nicu Albu, mayor of the city Piatra Neamt at that time. Considered one of the finest zoos in Romania, always clean and well cared for, here you can admire various species of animals representing the fauna of our country and other regions of the world.Thus, visitors of all ages can admire the brown bear with its massive body over 2m and weighing about 600kg,
